Plumbing and gas engineering are among the most financially rewarding and consistently in-demand skilled trades in the United Kingdom. With millions of ageing homes requiring ongoing maintenance, new housing developments demanding installation work and commercial properties needing specialist mechanical services, qualified plumbers and gas engineers enjoy excellent job security and strong earning potential.

Why Plumbing and Gas Engineering Are in High Demand

The UK faces a significant shortage of qualified plumbers and gas engineers, driven by an ageing workforce, insufficient training capacity and growing demand from the construction and property sectors. The transition to low-carbon heating systems including heat pumps is also creating entirely new skills requirements, and plumbers who upskill into these emerging technologies will be exceptionally well positioned for the decade ahead.

Qualifications Required

The standard pathway begins with a Level 2 Diploma in Plumbing and Domestic Heating, followed by a Level 3 Diploma. To work on gas appliances legally in the UK, engineers must be registered with the Gas Safe Register, which requires completing specific ACS gas qualifications. Working on gas without Gas Safe registration is illegal and extremely dangerous.

Plumbing and Gas Engineer Salaries

Apprentice plumbers earn between £12,000 and £18,000 during training. Qualified plumbers earn between £30,000 and £45,000 in employed positions. Self-employed plumbers with established client bases often earn between £50,000 and £80,000 annually. Gas Safe registered heating engineers command premium rates, particularly those qualified to install heat pumps and renewable heating systems.

Getting Started in Plumbing

Plumbing apprenticeships are available through local colleges and major employers including British Gas and SSE. The Chartered Institute of Plumbing and Heating Engineering provides professional membership and development resources for career progression.
